Phew! šŸ˜…šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø This one was like a puzzle for me to get just right (and hopefully you like it)! I recently read Matthew 5:13-16 during my morning devotional and I thought it would make a great song! So here we are.

Salt + Light

[verse 1]

You don’t have to go to the sea

If you’re thirsty

Don’t have to dig stones

To bring life to dry bones

Don’t have to sit at the table

Just be willing and able

[pre-chorus]

To show up

Abide

Trust God

Be sanctified

Show up

Abide

Trust God

Be sanctified

[chorus]

Jesus once told us

We’re the salt of the earth

He calls us to preserve

Our inner worth

What is pure and what is right

As salt

And as light

[verse 2]

Don’t have to be a gem

Full treasure’s within

You’re set apart like The One

So shine bright like the sun

Don’t know where to begin

To bring glory to Him

[pre-chorus]

Just show up

Abide

Trust God

Be sanctified

Show up

Abide

Trust God

Be sanctified

[chorus]

Jesus once told us

We’re the salt of the earth

He calls us to preserve

Our inner worth

What is pure and what is right

As salt

And as light

[pre-chorus]

Show up

Abide

Trust God

Be sanctified

[chorus]

Jesus once told us

We’re the salt of the earth

He calls us to preserve

Our inner worth

What is pure and what is right

As salt

And as light

[chorus]

Jesus once told us

We’re the salt of the earth

He calls us to preserve

Our inner worth

What is pure and what is right

As salt

And as light

LYRICS EXPLAINED

Verse 1

You don’t have to go to the sea

If you’re thirsty

Jesus can be found anywhere when you’re seeking Him (when you’re thirsty).

Don’t have to dig stones

To bring life to dry bones

You don’t have to work hard or dig to find nonbelievers (dry bones) and introduce them to Jesus (true life).

Don’t have to sit at the table

Just be willing and able

We, as christians, don’t have to be one of the original disciples sitting at the table with Jesus, a reference to the last supper with his disciples, to be willing and able to share the good news and be a disciple still today.

Pre-Chorus

Show up- surrender and be willing to be obedient.

Abide- maintain a continual relationship with Christ/God.

Trust God

Be Sanctified- to be set apart for a special, holy purpose.

Chorus

Jesus once told us

We’re the salt of the earth

He calls us to preserve

Our inner worth

What is pure and what is right

As salt

And as light

Jesus calls us to preserve our Christianity and our true inner worth in Christ, like they used salt back then to preserve and add goodness (flavor) to food. We want to preserve what is pure and right and good in us to bring others to Christ.

Verse 2 (into the pre-chorus)

Don’t have to be a gem

Full treasure’s within

You don’t have to be perfect (a gem) to be treasured by God. Your real, full treasure/worth is found within you.

You’re set apart like The One

So shine bright like the sun

You were created on purpose, for a purpose just like The One (Jesus) to shine His light in the world.

Don’t know where to begin

To bring glory to Him

And when you don’t know where to begin to bring glory to God, you just have to show up, abide, trust, and allow him to change and use you according to His will.
